During this workshop we will cover the fundamental principles of painting and drawing by moving through art history. Students will learn the the unique technical lessons offered by each era, hear about the history, study the art and architecture, and be immersed in the music of the period as they work. In addition to shorter exercises based on each area of study, there will be a sustained project throughout the week. Students will make their own sketchbook, complete a master copy, and explore a variety of subject matter. We will study line, value, form, composition, and color through drawing, painting, and even a lesson in calligraphy. Parents and family members will be invited to attend an art show reception on Friday afternoon put on by the kids to showcase their work. Instructor information below.

Mattie Ree Neal and Samuel Walter will be co-teaching this 5 day class. Mattie is a native Nashville artist. Daughter of Michael Shane Neal, she grew up with the dream of becoming an artist and is pursuing her passion for painting. Mattie is currently the Artist in Residence at Lipscomb University, and is working as a commissioned portrait painter. She received the Scholastic American Visions Award for Painting with a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York, has had her work displayed at the United States Capitol, and has pieces in the collections of the Players Club of New York and Cheekwood Museum in Nashville. Samuel Walter lives in New Haven Connecticut where he received his M.A and M.M.A from the Yale School of Music. While completing his graduate and undergraduate degrees, he established himself as a commissioned portrait painter. His work is collected by individuals and institutions including presidents, professors and administration at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Swarthmore College, Haverford College, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. Mattie and Samuel met in Washington D.C. at the Portrait Society of America Conference in the Spring of 2023 and were kindred spirits indeed. Mattie and Samuel both have a passion for teaching and working with their promising young students. We will have so much fun this summer and hope to have you in class!
